Learning to ride a bicycle

Marta has just learned to ride a bicycle! Boy, oh boy, is she proud of herself. And so am I! There’s no stopping this little girl now. Every day she asks me or Warren to take her out to ride her bike. At the moment we’re taking her to a local school playground. Since the school is closed for the Summer the empty paved area is an excellent practicing spot until she’s confident and able to ride in a place where she has to break promptly or sway to avoid obstacles, namely the pedestrians.

We never went for the training wheels. When she outgrew her tricycle between the ages 3 and 4, a friend gave us a Skuut – one of those bikes with wooden frame and no pedals – that belonged to her daughter. Those pedal-less bikes are really wonderful for young children as they break down the skills involved in riding a bicycle. First the child pushes the skuut with their feet learning to balance on the two wheels, then they learn to glide and steer for short distances. When they upgrade to a bike with pedals it’s really quick to combine all the skills with the pedaling. It’s really brilliant.

You go Martinha!
